To the Stars & Stripes: American Flag Etiquette

To the Stars & Stripes: American Flag Etiquette

One of the most well-known embroidered artifacts in this country is the grand ‘ole American flag.

Flag Code or Etiquette honors the ways to respect and care for the American flag as a symbol of our country. Branches of the American Military also have distinct rituals involving the American flag.  In the spirit of this sunny Memorial Day weekend, here’s some patriotic facts on flag etiquette:

Did you know?

  • The American Flag consists of two parts, the union, (the blue square at the top left with 50 stars representing the 50 US states) and the remaining portion of 13 red and white stripes representing the original 13 colonies.
  • When this country was founded it expanded rapidly, and the union part of the flag was continually changed to incorporate the new territories and states. There have been 39 different versions of the US flag!   See them here
  • Often in military occasions, there is a proper way to fold a flag. See an animated .gif showing how to fold a flag here.
  • On governmental or state-employee uniforms, such as policemen, government officials, or military, a flag patch is sewn on the right and left upper sleeves. The flag patch used on the right upper sleeve is always sewn in reverse, because tradition dictates that the union (blue) part of the flag should be closest to the heart.

  • Half-Staff

The flag is flown at half-staff on national holidays like:

  • Peace Officers Memorial Day, May 15th (sunrise to sunset)
  • Memorial Day, last Monday in May (sunrise to noon)
  • Patriot Day, September 11th (sunrise to sunset)
  • National Firefighters Memorial Day, October
  • Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, December 7th (sunrise to sunset)
  • President’s Day, 3rd Monday in February: A celebration situated between Lincoln’s and Washington’s Birthdays. It is not a half staff day.
  • Flag Day, June 14, It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777.

The flag is flown at half-staff to honor a recent tragedy out of respect for it’s victims.

Only the President and state Governors can decide when and how long the American flag should be flown at half-staff for a national/state tragedy.

Sports Warm-Ups for fitness or daywear

Sports Warm-Ups for fitness or daywear

Gone is the asumption that local sports teams are traditionally for children, teenagers, and college students. Recently community sports teams and fitness programs for adults have enjoyed the largest popularity spike since the neon suit work-out craze of the 1980s.

Many adults today are enjoying participating in local and community sports teams, and fitness programs in and out of their houses, like cardio, aerobics, yoga, pilates, power-workouts such as strength and agility training, crossfit, zumba, plyometric jump training, martial arts and self-defense programs. In many ways these programs are better than simply going to the gym; adults are interacting in team sports, or the art of a certain fitness to make a new group of friends, increase their interest in the practice and continue it throughout life.

A helpful addition to sports and fitness is the wearing the best clothing, including active wear that stretches and is made for the sport. Since the major retail brands have developed sport-performance fabric, many other brands have imitated cool or heat-retention fabric, ergonomic design and flexible cuts.

Whether you’re on a sports team, a fitness team, or coaching, here are some fitness wear clothes and warm-ups for you to check out. We also provide custom embroidered or screenprinted logos for your team or company. We have many colors and sizing options for your school or team colors, from manufacturers such as adidas, Nike, Alo Sport, Augusta, Gildan and Bella + Canvas.

Explore the Shore on the other side: South Jersey’s Bayshore

Apr 2, 2015 4:49:28 PM / by Rachel Rodgers

Do you love going down the Jersey Shore every summer? This summer try something different with a trip to the other side of South Jersey, the Delaware Bayshore region.

Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Delaware Damage

Along the Delaware River Bay, this beautiful strip of beaches on the bayshore enjoys   less wind and extreme heat, there’s also a big boating and waterman’s culture in practically every town. Big-time fishing, crabbing and boating town like Maurice Rive  Cove, Port Norris, Bivalve, Shellpile, and Fortescue were one of the largest oyster-  harvesting regions in the world in the 20th century. As opposed to the small and crowded property lots in some other shore towns, the Bayshore area is  peaceful and beautiful: full of wide-open coastal property and uncrowded beaches along the coast.
The Charlesworth Restaurant and Hotel, Fortescue, NJ
A favorite fresh seafood resturant for locals is theCharlesworth Hotel and Restaurant in Fortescue, NJ. A nearly 100-year-old historical inn and restaurant, the Charlesworth serves heaps of fresh seafood dishes directly from the region. After the horrible blow from Superstorm Hurricane Sandy in Oct. 2012, the owners Jim and Shirley Fonash weren’t sure that they would be able to save it.  With the help of  countless volunteer builders and numerous repairs, the Charlesworth will be reopening tommorrow, for it’s first summer season since 2012.
Come to the Charlesworth Restaurant and other amazing beaches and venues onSouth Jersey’s Delaware Bayshore this summer.

Feel free to check out these nautical items and boater’s totes for your beachy summer plans.

The Latest Techie Products to Promote your Business

The Latest Techie Products to Promote your Business

Mar 18, 2015 2:53:00 AM / by Rachel Rodgers

At the ISS and Expo East show at the Atlantic City Convention Center this weekend, there were millions of new items in the industry, especially techie products.

NEW for 2015, here’s some hot new techie items for employees, clients, or a special event. These are our recommendations:

1. Selfie Stick

Taking self portraits is all the rage on social media. These are great for a company that needs employees to photograph coverage at large events too. This handheld tripod is adjustable,  the device is portable for your smart phone, and completely retractable and compact. It also has a remote component near the end of the stick so you can snap the photo and hold the stick with one hand. It may be the next big thing since the video camera, or it may be just a narcissistic fad of the year, but one thing’s for certain, the selfie stick is trending around the world. See it here: http://www.pslworld.com/products/view/OD5086OD5086-BK

2. USB/Outlet/Car Charging Adapter

With 2 USB plugs, an AC wall outlet and a car charger, this multi-functional device is the perfect charger with extreme practical use. It contains 4.8A total output, delivers high speed charging to all latest devices.
and charges two tablets or devices simultaneously at full speed!  http://www.tomaxusa.com/AC-DC-iPad-Power-Adapter-AD480.html?cate=121

3.  Power banks

Power banks are the greatest techie accessory: they eliminate practically all need to be in close proximity to a power outlet. These slim ultra-compact power banks will supply power for devices like your smartphone, GPS, tablet, computer, iPod: almost anything. There are many high-quality power banks on the market. The most impressive spec with high-quality power banks is the sheer longevity that it can charge. With power banks and other chargers, it’s important to have enough power to withstand the devices it charges. An low-quality internal Lithium battery is risky for your devices, if a low-quality battery is overworked, it can cause an explosion on the device, and in some cases also the power bank itself. Make sure you purchase your power banks from a trustworthy brand, and check the specs to purchase the right amount of power usage for charging your larger devices. A power bank with the capacity of 12,500mAh and  5V/1.5A is the standard –most power banks of this strength will store enough energy equivalent to charging a tablet 2 full times before needing to be connected to a power source. Here’s an entire page of cutting edge power banks to browse: http://www.tomaxusa.com/Chargers-Power-Banks/

Let a Soft Shell keep you warm this winter!

Let a Soft Shell keep you warm this winter!

Soft shells or bonded fleece fabric is a popular fabric used for outerwear, winter wear, sportswear, and blankets. But what exactly is it and what is it made of?

Fleece is made of polyester, which is a chemically derived fabric made from the polymer compound of two petroleum products: terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. These two chemicals form a polymer called is polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. The PET in a syrup-texture form is is then extruded into fibers by forcing the polymer through minute holes and forming small threads. After drying it can easily be pressed and formed into fabrics we call polyester and polyester fleece.

With high-performance sportswear, bonded fleece is more weather resistant, and because it’s pressed so tightly it locks in warmth and whisks away moisture. Bonded fleece creates one fabric with two different sides. The process of bondingpresses together two fabrics permanently so that one side is different than the other. This makes for a premade two-sided liner in one fabric. Adhesives, binders, or thin slices of foam may be used as the marrying agent. Fabrics can also be bonded to ultra-thin slices of foam or other materials on the cutting tables, and make possible easier handling of fragile cloths such as delicate laces, sheer materials, or lightweight knits. Bonded fabrics are commonly used in outerwear, and corporate wear jackets.

By bonding together two different weights and textures of fleece, one fabric can be strong, durable, be able to lock in warmth, and have two separate functions in one single fabric. One side may be a liner close to the body, and one side may be the weather-repellent outer shell.

Fleece is a favorite because it’s extremely warm, comfy, virtually poreless and it doesn’t pill.   But bonded fleece is one step up for adventurous outerwear: perfect for the athlete, cold-weather enthusiast and adventurer, against cold and dreary weather.

Check out our Selection of Soft Shell Jackets below. We have hooded, color-block, heavy weight and light weight jackets.

What makes sport performance fabric unique?

What makes sport performance fabric unique?

Mar 5, 2015 7:00:00 PM / by Rachel Rodgers

Sport performance fabric is durable, suitable for hot and cold weather patterns, and helps to regulate your body’s temperature from heat and cold when you are training athletically outdoors. Whether in cold or heat, some performance fabrics can whisk away excess sweat, and allow cool air through, or lock in heat to act as a barrier to the cold and wind.

The materials used are usually various forms of polyester, nylon, and spandex. The combination of these synthetic fabrics in the correct amounts, with the right stitch and bonded process make the product successful.  When we are talking about layering, for garments close to the body, many products use a blend of polyester and spandex. The type of stitch and appropriate blend of fabric determines whether the product is for summer or winter use. The blend of polyester and spandex provide stretch, wiking and odor control.

Here is an article discussing sport performance fabric of products from some of our suppliers: Alpha Broder and SanMar. Click here to learn more: Active Fabrics for Active People, ASI

Although the polo shirt is the standard when we think of customized company apparel, quarter-zip pullover sweaters are becoming the hot trend. They’re becoming more and more popular for either tailored, rugged, or sport cuts, and for their diverse layering options.

The quarter-zip is everywhere in company apparel — especially in the winter —and it looks great for company casual events as well. New England area, private-school, fashion-conscious college campuses are loving the trend. Both professors and students find the sweater easy to layer for work or semi-formal events. For men, it’s great with a crisp button-down for a more formal look, or with a Henley shirt for a more relaxed feel. Popular colors are ones from nature: tans, dark blues, olive greens, maroons and reds, grays, and burnt oranges.

Learn more about the high-quality Better Sweater Fleece Quarter-Zip from Patagonia here.

Check out sleek quarter-zip pullovers and heavier quarter-zip fleeces for winter on our website. We carry quality brands like Patagonia, Cutter & Buck, Storm Creek, Hanes, Champion, Nike, Bodek & Rhodes, Alo Sport, Ash City, and more.  To us, any item can be customized: it can be embroidered or screen-printed for your company.
