Soft shells or bonded fleece fabric is a popular fabric used for outerwear, winter wear, sportswear, and blankets. But what exactly is it and what is it made of?
Fleece is made of polyester, which is a chemically derived fabric made from the polymer compound of two petroleum products: terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. These two chemicals form a polymer called is polyethylene terephthalate, or PET. The PET in a syrup-texture form is is then extruded into fibers by forcing the polymer through minute holes and forming small threads. After drying it can easily be pressed and formed into fabrics we call polyester and polyester fleece.
With high-performance sportswear, bonded fleece is more weather resistant, and because it’s pressed so tightly it locks in warmth and whisks away moisture. Bonded fleece creates one fabric with two different sides. The process of bondingpresses together two fabrics permanently so that one side is different than the other. This makes for a premade two-sided liner in one fabric. Adhesives, binders, or thin slices of foam may be used as the marrying agent. Fabrics can also be bonded to ultra-thin slices of foam or other materials on the cutting tables, and make possible easier handling of fragile cloths such as delicate laces, sheer materials, or lightweight knits. Bonded fabrics are commonly used in outerwear, and corporate wear jackets.
Fleece is a favorite because it’s extremely warm, comfy, virtually poreless and it doesn’t pill. But bonded fleece is one step up for adventurous outerwear: perfect for the athlete, cold-weather enthusiast and adventurer, against cold and dreary weather.
