Fitness wear (aka: active wear, sportswear, athletic wear) is becoming the new trend in fashion, and even in the high fashion world on the runway. With new releases such as Nike’s high-fashion designer sneakers and millions of options for fitness clothing, sales are soaring for all price points. Alyssa Vingan of Fashionista.com says, “activewear sales are booming, and the active sports category is the fastest-growing segment of the market.”  High-fashion people and celebrities put big emphasis on daily workouts, toning and personal training. And now, with a wide variation of engineered sport performance fabrics for athletes and fitness junkies,”having the right high-end workout gear has become just as important. Of course, this phenomenon is not limited to the fashion community, though the industry has seen an uptick in sports-inspired clothing and activewear as daywear in 2014.”

“It seems that everywhere we turn — including publications like French Vogue —active wear is present, and this might just be the beginning.” For athletes, whether professionals, amateurs or weekenders, buyers are looking out for the type of fabrics. Sweat resistant, heat retention and layering options become a priority. For fitness and activewear, the basic sports bra and yoga pants are expanding to a whole new level. For excercise that involves a lot of flexibility such as yoga and gymnastics, the first concern is the quality and functionality, the next is fashion: or how the outfit works together as a whole, especially when training.

“It’s really based on the trend towards active wear as day wear and weekend wear, which we’ve seen as a fast growing theme on the runways for the past few seasons,” says Sheila Aimette, VP of North American Content at trend forecasting firm WGSN.

Higher-end retail brands and clothing designers who traditionally focus on women’s feminine or boho styles, instead of athletes — have released specific clothing lines for fitness. One such brand is Free People.  Their Movement Collection is designed for Yoga, Dance, Surfing and Running. The pairing or tops and pants elegantly take into consideration the different movements in each fitness. From yoga pants to surfing bathing suits, hems are higher on pants and lower on sports bras, so that when you’re stretching your clothes will stretch with you.
